100% detection rate across baggage handling systems.

Europe's third-largest airport deployed SAM4 to monitor critical baggage conveyors. During a 12-month trial, every single developing fault was caught in advance — 9 out of 9 — enabling overnight maintenance with zero passenger disruption.

Overview

Europe's third-largest airport, where reliability is non-negotiable

Amsterdam Airport Schiphol serves over 70 million passengers annually — Europe's third-largest airport. Reliable baggage handling is non-negotiable. With physical space constraints limiting expansion, Schiphol focuses on maximizing the reliability of existing baggage lines through technology.

By deploying SAM4, Schiphol achieved perfect detection accuracy while maintaining seamless operations with zero passenger disruption.

The Challenge

Downtime is unacceptable at 70 million passengers per year

Schiphol's baggage handling system runs around the clock with tight turnaround windows. Traditional condition monitoring approaches were impractical — conveyors can't be taken offline for inspection during operating hours, and manual checks couldn't provide continuous fault visibility.

A single conveyor failure during peak hours would immediately impact departures, transfers, and passenger experience. The airport needed a solution that could detect faults at least 5 days before failure, was easy to install at scale, and could be maintained without disrupting operations.

The Solution

SAM4 in the motor control cabinet — zero disruption to operations

SAM4 was installed inside motor control cabinets across critical baggage handling assets. Because no hardware is placed on the conveyors themselves, deployment was fast and required no changes to Schiphol's infrastructure. The automated learning cycle took four weeks per asset.

Once live, SAM4 monitored around the clock and delivered alerts when faults developed. This enabled maintenance to be scheduled overnight — during the natural gap in operations — with no impact on passengers. The 12-month trial delivered perfect accuracy: 9 detections, 9 confirmed faults.

Detections Confirmed

All developing faults were caught in advance during the 12-month trial period with 100% accuracy.

100%

Zero Disruption Rate

All maintenance performed overnight, during natural operating gaps, with no impact on passengers.

Scale

Expansion Approved

Based on results, Schiphol is expanding SAM4 across the entire baggage production system.

At first I was a bit skeptical about SAM4's ability to detect failures, but the results speak for themselves: It just works.

Pieter Bakker Baggage Service Manager, Schiphol Airport

Early detections enable us to create timely work orders, so that issues are dealt with at night, without interruptions to the system and our passengers.
